To help our people unite around that shared purpose, KBR is striving to create environments where everyone feels they can be themselves and where they can belong, connect and grow.

Unlocking Potential is a new KBR Link section that highlights KBR’s Talent Development efforts and the amazing stories of peoples’ career journeys at KBR .

Wherever you are on your journey, there’s a wealth of resources available to help you grow — from performance and career development, to professional certifications, to leadership and technical skills courses, and more! KBR wants every team member to take advantage of the resources at your fingertips to help take charge of your career. And you can learn about them right here. In this edition, we’re focusing on the Front Line Leader Program.

KBR Front Line Leader Program

Frontline leaders are central to everything happening across the company and critical to KBR achieving its business priorities. These leaders translate business strategy, communicate with customers and suppliers, and motivate team members to ensure implementation and drive productivity. They’re also all-important models of KBR’s culture and values.

KBR rolled out the new Front Line Leader Program in May 2023, with the purpose of increasing the capability of our managers/supervisors and developing a highly engaged and empowered workforce. The program supports these leaders in growing their interpersonal skills and developing the skills of their team members.

“Many frontline leaders are promoted due to their great technical skills and accomplishments, but as many of us have experienced, being a successful people leader is a different challenge, requiring new skills and approaches.”
BOB NEWHOUSE, VICE PRESIDENT OF TALENT DEVELOPMENT

“Many frontline leaders are promoted due to their great technical skills and accomplishments, but as many of us have experienced, being a successful people leader is a different challenge, requiring new skills and approaches,” said Bob Newhouse, vice president of Talent Development. “This program was designed for leaders across the entire company — whether from a technical discipline, a corporate function or other business area — and accommodates several different learning styles. It also aligns with KBR’s leadership competencies and people processes, such as Agile Performance and Development, to help managers build skills for effective Check-in Conversations. Importantly, it’s an opportunity for these leaders to learn and network with colleagues across the organization.”

The Front Line Leader Program is designed for all managers or supervisors of individual contributors and those who may be first-level or first-time leaders. Participants learn key skills in forming and nurturing effective workplace relationships, team effectiveness, workplace safety and more.

The program includes five four-hour courses

These are led by certified KBR facilitators from across the business.

The courses are:

  • Leading Self: Turn Awareness into Impact
  • Communication: Connect Through Conversations
  • Coaching: Move People Forward
  • Strategies for Influencing Others
  • Executing Strategy at the Front Line

KBR Leadership Development Model

KBR’s leadership competencies derive from KBR’s business strategy, priorities and objectives, and the leadership drivers necessary to executive the strategy successfully. The leadership competencies cascade with increased breadth, scope and complexity at each level and serve as a success profile, or aspirational picture, that defines ideal leadership elements and characteristics one needs to be considered outstanding in a leadership role.

The Front Line Leadership Competencies are:

  • Guiding Team Success
  • Creating Relationships
  • Decision-making
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Managing Work
  • Customer Satisfaction
  • Adapting to Change

The competencies were developed on the foundation of the ONE KBR Values and the Core Behaviors and Competencies that apply to everyone at KBR.

Want to Get With the Program?

The goal is for all frontline leaders to complete this program, so courses are run weekly around the world.

On average, there are five courses being run globally each week, reaching about 100 participants.

If you are a frontline leader and interested in registering for the course, talk to your direct manager and human resources partner. KBR business units and functions register students regularly throughout the year.

If you are an aspiring frontline leader, please complete the self-directed journey in KBR Learning — “Aspiring Front Line Leaders.” And be sure to talk with your direct supervisor about your career development in your next Check-in Conversation. More information on this program and links to the modules are available here: Self Directed for Aspiring Front Line Leaders (sharepoint.com)
