Frequently asked housing questions

Can I participate in roommate matching?
Students who sign a spring contract are not eligible to participate in roommate matching, as spaces are limited. If you do have a preferred roommate, you can contact our University Housing Services to discuss available options and next steps.
Will I get to select my own room?
Students who sign a spring contract are not eligible to participate in online room selection. They can submit room and location preferences as well as update their personal profile. The Housing team will use this information to finalize your placement based on space availability.
When do I need to have my contract signed?
We encourage spring admits to sign their contract and submit their initial payment by December 1 to ensure you are assigned before the university closure in December. However, you can complete your contract at any time through January 24. Students who submit after December 1 may not be assigned a space until early January.
If I qualify for a Themed Living Learning Community (TLLC), do I have to live on that floor?
If you qualify for the TLLC, that is just one of the available options to you. You are not required to live on a TLLC. It is just one of the options we consider when we are assigning you a space.
If I miss the priority filing date, will I get housing?
Yes, you can sign a contract at any point until January 24. Students who sign after December 1 will likely be assigned a room in early January by University Housing Services staff.
What is the Rainbow Floor?
The Rainbow Floor Themed Living-Learning Community is designed for students interested in a living community supportive of LGBTQ+ identifying students. This could include individuals who identify with the community along with those who identify as allies.
How can I guarantee that I get the room that I want?
Even if a student completes their contract early, there is no guarantee that they will get the exact room type or location that they want, as it is all based on space availability. It is a good idea for students to keep an open mind, as spaces for spring contracts are limited. Staff will do their best to assign you to one of your preferences; however, we cannot guarantee they will be met.
What do I do if my floor does not have a gender-neutral bathroom?
All-gender floors typically have male and female bathrooms. Students can use the bathroom that best fits their gender identity.
Are there gender-neutral bathrooms in the halls?
We have eight floors that have gender-neutral bathrooms. Hewett 4 and 14, Manchester floors 4, 10 (Fine Arts), 11 (Fine Arts), 12 (Music), 13 (Big Red Marching Machine), and 16 (Rainbow). These floors have a male, female, and gender-neutral bathrooms.
Who is assigned to gender-neutral bedrooms?
Students of any gender identity can live together in gender-neutral rooms. If the student opts to be in a single-gender room, they will not see gender-neutral rooms as an option.
What does it mean that assignments are based on gender identity?
We know gender identity is fluid and diverse. At Illinois State, for assignments and system needs, students can select from three gender identities: male, female, and non-binary. Students can opt to roommate match with people of their same identity or across different gender identities. Placements are based on student gender identity and not birth sex. Rooms are designated male, female, or neutral. Anyone can live in a gender-neutral room.
