Benefits of living on campus
Housing staff
Transitioning to campus life and college classes can be stressful at times. Support and resources are always available in university housing. University Housing Services has more than 300 staff members who live and work in the residence halls and apartments, while also serving as a resource for you.
Our staff is here to assist you in your transition to college living:
- Student Area Managers (SAMs) provide a variety of resources at our front desks. They can help you with checking out resources, assisting with lockouts, and getting your packages.
- Resident Assistants (RAs) are student interns who live on the floors to provide resources, enforce policies, and build community. RAs serve in a 24/7 on call rotation for their buildings.
- Service Area Coordinators (SACs) are full-time live-in professionals who supervise the front desk staff, fitness centers, and oversee mail and room key operations.
- Residence Hall Coordinators (RHCs) are full-time live-in professionals who coordinate and supervise all the services and RAs in their building. They can be a great resource if you have concerns about your living experience.
- Residential Case Managers are full-time live-in professionals who can provide you with support, resources, and help in navigating college life challenges.
- Night Operations has full-time professionals and student staff. They provide safety and security measures at every on-campus residential area from midnight to 6 a.m.
- Area Coordinators (ACs) are full-time live-in professionals who have obtained a master’s degree and have student staff experience from other roles. They are responsible for the supervision and administration of a residential area.
- Full-time staff follows a 24/7 on-call structure so that any and all situations, concerns, or emergencies are handled by staff who are on-site at all times.
Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion
The residence halls and apartments are like miniature neighborhoods, as students from diverse cultures live together. It’s an opportunity to meet and interact with others who have different values, beliefs, and opinions and to learn about the ideas and traditions held by others. The University is committed to supporting diversity. University Housing Services promotes an environment where all cultures, races, gender identities, and religions are valued and appreciated. All room and roommate assignments and room changes are made without regard to race, religion, or sexual orientation. University Housing Services makes housing and roommate assignments based upon a student’s gender identity, not birth sex. Students are asked to select their gender identity when they begin using the Housing and Dining Portal. Students who would like more individualized attention regarding their room assignment should contact Associate Director for Residential Operations Guadalupe Montalvo at (309) 438-5967. Or if you have general questions regarding the process please contact our main housing line at (309) 438-8611.
